English Museums and the Collecting of Archaeological Archives , completed in March 2003, was commissioned by the Society of Museum Archaeologists and funded by English Heritage. Returns were obtained from all but 3 from a sample of 145, a 98% return.
This was followed up with approaches to every county, unitary or district local authority in England to identify collecting practice. The report can be found on the Archaeological Data Service website at http://ads.ahds.ac.uk, where interactive maps locating collecting areas by local authority have been added. The report is filed within their Special Collections as Archaeological Collections areas (Society of Museum Archaeologists).
Access to Archaeological Archives, a study for Resource and the Archaeological Archives Forum, was completed in November 2003. It assessed levels of access to excavation archives and their associated costs.
